Hire a Car with Driver in Phu Quoc: Prices & How to Book (2026)

A private car with driver is the most comfortable and safest way to get around Phu Quoc. Prices start at $8 for an airport pickup and $30-50 for a half-day island tour. Unlike Grab (barely functional here), motorbike rental (risky roads), or self-driving (no international licenses accepted), a local driver gives you air-conditioned comfort, local knowledge, and zero navigation stress.

I live on Phu Quoc and arrange drivers for travelers every week. Here are the real prices and exactly how to book without overpaying.

Quick Answer
A full-day car with driver (8 hours) costs $50-65 for a sedan or $60-80 for a 7-seat SUV. Airport pickup runs $8-12. Book through a local contact for the best rate โ€” hotel desks and apps charge 30-50% more.

Why Hire a Car with Driver (vs Other Options)

Phu Quoc is a 574 kmยฒ island with attractions spread across 50+ kilometers from north to south. Here's how a private driver compares to every other transport option.

Car with Driver vs Motorbike Rental

Motorbike rental is cheap ($7-10/day) but comes with serious risks. Phu Quoc roads are poorly maintained, especially in the north. Dirt roads, potholes, stray dogs, and unpredictable local traffic cause multiple tourist accidents every month. Most travel insurance does not cover motorbike accidents without an international driving permit.

Choose a car with driver if: you have kids, you're not confident on motorbikes, it's rainy season (June-October), or you want to visit the north island where roads are rough.

Car with Driver vs Grab/Taxi

Grab exists on Phu Quoc but barely works. Wait times are 15-40 minutes, drivers frequently cancel, and coverage outside Duong Dong town is almost zero. Traditional taxis (Mai Linh, Vinasun) are more reliable but charge by the meter โ€” a full-day of sightseeing will cost you $80-120 by meter, nearly double what a pre-arranged driver costs.

The math: A north island day trip by Grab would require 4-5 separate bookings (if drivers even accept). With cancellations and wait times, you lose 1-2 hours. A private driver waits for you at every stop.

Car with Driver vs Self-Drive Rental

Self-drive car rental barely exists on Phu Quoc. The few companies that offer it require a Vietnamese driving license or an international driving permit specifically validated for Vietnam. Roads have no English signage. Navigation apps are unreliable for smaller roads. If you get in an accident, the liability situation without proper documentation is a nightmare.

Bottom line: For $50-65/day, a driver removes all the risk, stress, and wasted time. Split between 2-4 people, it's $12-30 per person โ€” barely more than renting a motorbike.

Avoid This Common Surprise
Some hotel-arranged drivers will take you to specific shops or restaurants where they earn commission. The "free" lunch stop turns into a 45-minute hard sell at a pearl shop. When booking through me, I instruct drivers: no commission stops unless you specifically ask.

English, Korean & Russian-Speaking Drivers

Most Phu Quoc drivers speak basic Vietnamese and limited English. If language matters, here's what to expect.

English-Speaking Drivers

Available but in high demand. Drivers with conversational English charge $5-10 extra per day. They can explain sights, recommend food, and handle any issues. Book at least 2-3 days ahead during peak season.

Korean-Speaking Drivers

Korean is the second most common tourist language on Phu Quoc. Several drivers speak basic Korean, though fewer than English. If you need a Korean-speaking driver, book 3-5 days ahead. Alternatively, I can provide a driver with a Korean translation card for common phrases and destinations.

Russian-Speaking Drivers

Russian-speaking drivers exist but are rare and charge a premium ($10-15 extra/day). For most Russian travelers, I recommend a standard driver plus a printed itinerary in Russian with all destinations and notes translated. This works surprisingly well.

Translation Workaround

For any language, your driver can use real-time phone translation apps. I set up a shared group chat (WhatsApp or Telegram) with you, the driver, and myself โ€” so if any communication issue arises, I translate instantly.

3 Ways to Book a Car with Driver

Option 1: Through Your Hotel (Most Expensive)

Every hotel can arrange a car and driver. It's convenient โ€” you just ask the front desk. But hotels add 30-50% markup. A $50 driver becomes $65-75 through the hotel. The hotel takes a commission, and some pass along a lower-quality driver.

Price: 30-50% above market | Convenience: High | Value: Low

Option 2: Through an App โ€” Grab (Unreliable)

Grab works for point-to-point rides in Duong Dong town. For full-day bookings, there's no good app-based solution on Phu Quoc. You'd need to book multiple individual rides, deal with cancellations, and pay meter rates that add up to 2x the pre-arranged price.

Price: Variable, often 50-100% more for a full day | Convenience: Low on Phu Quoc | Value: Low

Option 3: Through a Local Contact (Best Price)

This is how locals and experienced travelers book. You contact someone on the island who works directly with drivers. No hotel markup, no app commission. The driver gets paid more, you pay less. Everyone wins except the middleman.

Price: Market rate (prices in this article) | Convenience: High | Value: Best

How it works: You message me your dates, itinerary, and group size. I confirm the price, match you with the right driver and car, and send you the driver's contact. You pay the driver directly in cash (VND or USD) or by bank transfer at the end of the day.

Safety Considerations

Phu Quoc is generally safe, but here are things to know about hiring drivers.

Vehicle Safety

All drivers I work with have properly maintained vehicles with functioning AC, seatbelts, and clean interiors. When booking independently, check the car condition before departing โ€” working seatbelts (both front and back), functioning AC, and a clean interior are non-negotiable.

Road Conditions

Phu Quoc's main coastal road (DT45) is well-paved. Interior roads and north island routes can be rough, especially after rain. SUVs are recommended for north island tours. Your driver will know which roads are passable โ€” another advantage over self-driving.

Insurance

All registered transport vehicles in Vietnam carry basic liability insurance. However, this coverage is minimal. Make sure your own travel insurance covers you as a passenger in a hired vehicle (most policies do โ€” verify before your trip).

Night Driving

Roads are poorly lit outside Duong Dong. If your itinerary includes evening activities, make sure your driver is comfortable with night driving. Most experienced drivers handle this fine, but it's worth mentioning when booking.

Tipping Etiquette

Tipping is not required or expected in Vietnamese culture, but it is appreciated by drivers, especially from foreign tourists.

Suggested Tips

Service Suggested Tip
Airport transfer 50,000 VND ($2) or round up the fare
Half-day (4h) 50,000โ€“100,000 VND ($2โ€“4)
Full day (8h) 100,000โ€“200,000 VND ($4โ€“8)
Exceptional service 200,000โ€“300,000 VND ($8โ€“12)

When to tip more: The driver went out of their way to find a great lunch spot, helped carry luggage, communicated well in your language, or stayed extra time without charging overtime.

When tipping isn't necessary: Short airport transfers, or if the service was just okay. No one will be offended.

How to tip: Hand cash directly to the driver at the end of the trip. Vietnamese dong is preferred, but USD is accepted.
