Phu Quoc Adventure Itinerary: Diving, Hiking & Kayaking (2026)

If your idea of a beach vacation involves sitting still, this isn't your itinerary. Phu Quoc has one of the most diverse adventure menus in Southeast Asia: scuba diving on coral reefs, trekking through a UNESCO-listed national park, kayaking past uninhabited islands, riding motorbikes through jungle roads, and hopping between 15+ islands in the An Thoi archipelago. All within an island that takes just 90 minutes to cross.

I've tested every adventure provider on Phu Quoc — the excellent ones, the mediocre ones, and the outright dangerous ones. This 5-day itinerary uses only operators I personally trust, with activities sequenced to maximize variety while respecting your body's need for recovery between intense days.

Adventure Itinerary Overview
**Best for:** Active travelers, couples seeking adventure, solo travelers, small groups

Fitness level: Moderate (no extreme climbing or marathon distances)

Budget: $500-900/person (mid-range) | $350-500 (budget) | $1,500-3,000 (premium)

Best months: November-April (calm seas, dry trails)

Must-book in advance: Scuba diving (1-2 days), private boat charter (3-5 days)

Day 1: Arrival & Snorkeling Warm-Up

Morning/Afternoon — Arrive and Set Up Base

Fly into Phu Quoc International Airport. Pick up your motorbike rental at the airport ($6-8/day) or arrange a transfer to your hotel. For adventure travelers, I recommend staying in Duong Dong or Ong Lang — central locations with easy access to the harbor (for boats), the national park (north), and the southern coast.

Spend the first couple of hours settling in. Check your dive booking for tomorrow, charge your GoPro, and hydrate — you'll want to be at full energy for the days ahead.

Late Afternoon — Snorkeling at Ong Lang or Ganh Dau

Ease into the water with an afternoon snorkel session. Ong Lang Beach has accessible reef sections near the rocky outcrops — no boat needed. Ganh Dau in the north has better coral but requires a short motorbike ride. Both locations offer 5-10 meter visibility in dry season with plenty of tropical fish.

This serves two purposes: acclimatize to the water temperature and conditions, and assess whether you want to upgrade from snorkeling to diving tomorrow.

Evening — Night Market Fuel-Up

Hit the Duong Dong Night Market for a high-protein dinner. Grilled squid, prawns, and fish provide the fuel your body needs for an active trip. Budget 100,000-200,000 VND ($4-8) for a full seafood dinner. Go early (6:00-7:00 PM) to avoid the tourist surge.

Day 1 Costs Per Person
- Airport transfer: $10-15 (or motorbike rental starts today) - Motorbike rental: $6-8/day - Accommodation: $30-60 - Snorkel gear rental: $5-8 (if needed) - Dinner: $4-8 - **Day 1 total: $55-99**

Day 2: Scuba Diving

The big one. Phu Quoc's diving scene is genuinely good — not Maldives-level, but excellent for the price with healthy coral, diverse marine life, and uncrowded sites.

Morning — Two-Tank Dive (Certified Divers)

A standard two-tank fun dive departs from An Thoi harbor around 8:00-8:30 AM. The boat reaches the first dive site in 30-45 minutes. Popular sites include Turtle Island (potential turtle sightings, reef sharks), Fingernail Island (soft coral gardens), and Dry Island (dramatic rock formations with swim-throughs).

  • Depth: 12-25 meters depending on site and certification level
  • Visibility: 8-20 meters (best December-March)
  • Water temperature: 27-30°C (wetsuit optional, most people use a thin 3mm or rashguard)
  • Marine life: Nudibranchs, lionfish, barracuda, reef sharks (occasional), moray eels, sea turtles, vast schools of tropical fish
  • Duration: Full morning, return to harbor by 12:30-1:00 PM

For Non-Certified Divers — Discover Scuba Diving (DSD)

Never dived before? A DSD experience includes pool instruction in the morning followed by a guided open-water dive to 8-12 meters. You'll be surprised how quickly it feels natural. Cost: $80-120 including everything. This counts as one of the best experiences on Phu Quoc — period.

For Certification — PADI Open Water

If you have 3-4 days, you can get your PADI Open Water certification on Phu Quoc. Costs $350-450 and includes classroom sessions, pool training, and 4 open-water dives. The water conditions here make it an excellent place to learn. You'd adjust Days 2-4 of this itinerary to incorporate the course.

Afternoon — Rest and Recovery

After diving, you should not fly for 18-24 hours and should avoid strenuous physical activity for the rest of the day. Perfect excuse for a lazy afternoon: pool time, cafe visit, or a post-dive massage ($8-15 at a local spa). Your body needs this recovery for tomorrow's hike.

Evening — Seafood Dinner on Long Beach

Celebrate your dive with dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants along Long Beach. Share your underwater photos over cold beer and grilled fish.

Book your adventure package — diving, kayaking, island hopping & more, all arranged.

Day 2 Costs Per Person
- Two-tank fun dive: $70-100 (or DSD: $80-120) - Accommodation: $30-60 - Massage: $8-15 - Dinner: $8-15 - **Day 2 total: $116-190**

Day 3: National Park Hiking

Phu Quoc National Park covers over 50% of the island and is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The interior is dense tropical forest with streams, waterfalls (seasonal), and mountain ridges offering panoramic views.

Morning — Ganh Dau to Cua Can Trail

The most rewarding hiking route runs through the northern section of the national park. Start early (7:00-8:00 AM) to beat the heat. The trail passes through primary forest, crosses streams, and climbs to viewpoints overlooking the island's northern coastline.

  • Difficulty: Moderate (some steep sections, uneven terrain)
  • Duration: 3-5 hours depending on pace and route
  • Distance: 8-12 km
  • What you'll see: Tropical hardwood forest, hornbills and other tropical birds, wild orchids, medicinal plants, panoramic island views
  • Guide: Strongly recommended. Trails aren't well-marked and it's easy to get lost. A local guide costs $15-30 and knows the best routes, wildlife spots, and safe paths.
  • Entry fee: 30,000 VND ($1.20)

Essential hiking tips:

  • Bring 2-3 liters of water per person — there are no shops on the trail
  • Wear closed-toe shoes with grip (not sandals)
  • Long pants protect against scratches and insects
  • Insect repellent is critical — the forest has mosquitoes
  • Start early — afternoon heat makes hiking miserable

Afternoon — Suoi Tranh Waterfall

After the main hike, stop at Suoi Tranh Waterfall on your way back south. This is a lighter walk (20-30 minutes from parking) through a pleasant stream valley to a small but refreshing waterfall. During dry season the flow reduces, but the swimming holes remain. Entry: 20,000 VND.

Alternatively, if your legs need a break, visit the Phu Quoc Bee Farm near the national park for honey tasting, herbal tea, and a shaded rest in hammocks. Free entry, and the honey is genuinely good.

Evening — Recover with Hot Food

Your legs will thank you for a hearty Vietnamese dinner tonight. Bun quay (Phu Quoc's signature noodle soup) is the perfect recovery meal — light, hydrating, and packed with flavor. Find it at local restaurants in Duong Dong for 30,000-50,000 VND.

Day 3 Costs Per Person
- National park entry: $1.20 - Hiking guide: $15-30 - Suoi Tranh entry: $0.80 - Motorbike fuel: $2-3 - Accommodation: $30-60 - Meals: $8-15 - **Day 3 total: $57-110**

Day 4: Island Hopping & Kayaking

Today combines two highlights into one epic day on the water.

Morning — Island Hopping Tour

Depart An Thoi harbor at 8:00-8:30 AM for the southern island archipelago. You have two options:

Group tour ($25-40/person): Visits 3-4 islands with snorkeling stops, lunch included. The boats carry 15-30 people. Fine for budget travelers and solo visitors. The itinerary is fixed but covers the best spots.

Private boat ($200-400 for the boat): Your own schedule, your own pace. The captain takes you to uncrowded spots, stays longer at the best snorkeling reefs, and finds private beaches. Split between 2-4 people, this costs $50-200 per person — worth it for the flexibility.

Both options include snorkeling at coral reefs around Fingernail Island, May Rut Island (stunning sandbar), and Gam Ghi Island. The water clarity around these islands exceeds anything on the main island.

Afternoon — Kayaking Session

After returning from island hopping (around 1:00-2:00 PM), head to a kayaking launch point. The best kayaking on Phu Quoc is along the northern coastline near Ganh Dau or around the mangrove areas in Cua Can.

Coastal kayaking (Ganh Dau/Rach Tram): Paddle along undeveloped coastline with jungle rising directly from the water. Sea conditions are calm in the lee of the northern headland. You can kayak to small secluded beaches inaccessible by road. Duration: 2-3 hours.

Mangrove kayaking (Cua Can): Explore the river system that feeds into the national park. Flat water, no waves, surrounded by mangrove forests. Look for mudskippers, water monitors, and kingfishers. This route is better for beginners and photographers. Duration: 1.5-2 hours.

  • Kayak rental: $10-20 per kayak (single or double)
  • Guided kayak tour: $20-40 per person (including equipment, guide, and transport)
  • SUP (stand-up paddleboard): Available at the same locations, $10-15/hour

Evening — Sunset Beach & BBQ

You've earned a spectacular evening. Head to Ong Lang Beach for sunset, then grill your own seafood at one of the beachfront BBQ spots or book a beachside restaurant for the evening. The contrast between the day's physical activity and a quiet sunset dinner is what makes adventure travel on Phu Quoc special.

Day 4 Costs Per Person
- Island hopping (group): $25-40 (or private: $50-200) - Kayaking guided tour: $20-40 - Accommodation: $30-60 - Meals: $10-20 - **Day 4 total: $85-360**

Day 5: Motorbike Exploration & Departure

Morning — Full-Island Motorbike Circuit

Your last day combines motorbike exploration with any sites you missed. A full loop of Phu Quoc's main roads covers approximately 80-100 km and takes 3-5 hours with stops.

Recommended route:

  1. Start from Duong Dong heading north along the coastal road
  2. Stop at Bai Dai Beach for a morning swim at the island's widest beach
  3. Continue to Ganh Dau Cape — views across to Cambodia
  4. Cut through the interior on the cross-island road (jungle scenery, pepper farms)
  5. Detour to Sao Beach on the east coast — arguably the most photogenic beach on Phu Quoc
  6. Loop back through An Thoi and up Long Beach to Duong Dong

Motorbike tips for the final ride:

  • Fill up your tank in Duong Dong — gas stations are sparse in the north
  • The cross-island road has unpaved sections — manageable on a scooter but take it slow
  • Morning is the best time — less traffic, cooler temperatures, better light for photos
  • Return the motorbike by early afternoon if you have an afternoon flight

If you're not comfortable on a motorbike: Hire a car with driver ($40-60 for a half day) and cover the same route in air-conditioned comfort. I arrange private drivers who know the best stops and photo spots.

Afternoon — Departure

Return your motorbike, grab a final meal, and head to the airport. If your flight is late, use the extra time for one last beach session or a massage.

Best Value Combo
The best value is booking **diving + island hopping + kayaking as a package** through a single operator. I bundle these activities together and save my guests 15-20% compared to booking each separately. The logistics are simpler too — one contact for everything.

Fitness Requirements by Activity

Scuba diving — No fitness test required, but you should be comfortable in water and able to swim 200 meters. Medical conditions (asthma, heart problems, recent surgery) may disqualify you — the dive center will ask you to complete a medical questionnaire.

National park hiking — Moderate fitness. You should be able to walk 8-12 km over uneven terrain with some inclines. The heat and humidity add difficulty — if you can walk 10 km at home, expect the Phu Quoc version to feel like 15 km. No technical climbing involved.

Kayaking — Minimal fitness needed. Upper body strength helps but isn't essential. Calm-water routes (mangroves) require almost no effort. Coastal routes need slightly more paddling strength against currents. Beginners do fine on all standard routes.

Island hopping + snorkeling — Very minimal. You sit on a boat and swim at stops. Life jackets provided for non-swimmers. The boat does the work.

Motorbike exploration — Requires riding confidence, not fitness. If you've never ridden a scooter, practice in quiet areas first or hire a driver. Phu Quoc traffic is light compared to mainland Vietnam but still requires attention.

What to Bring

Bring from home:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (critical — coral protection)
  • Waterproof phone case or GoPro
  • Closed-toe water shoes or hiking sandals with grip
  • Quick-dry athletic clothing
  • Insect repellent (DEET-based for jungle hiking)
  • Reusable water bottle (1L minimum)

Rent on Phu Quoc:

  • Snorkel gear ($5-8/day or $3-5 on boat tours)
  • Kayaks ($10-20/session)
  • Motorbike ($6-8/day)
  • Diving equipment (included in dive price)

Don't bother bringing:

  • Full wetsuit (water is 27-30°C, a rashguard is enough)
  • Heavy hiking boots (too hot — trail shoes or good sandals work)
  • Surfboard (no surf on Phu Quoc)

Booking Tips for Adventure Activities

Dive centers — book 1-2 days ahead during peak season. Walk-ins are possible in low season. Choose PADI-certified centers only. The cheapest option is rarely the safest. I work with three dive centers that I've personally vetted for safety, equipment quality, and instructor experience.

Island hopping — book 1 day ahead for group tours. Private charters need 3-5 days advance booking in peak season. Many hostels and hotels sell group tours at the same price as booking direct.

Kayaking — same day booking usually works. Rental spots on the beach don't require reservations. Guided mangrove tours should be booked 1 day ahead.

Hiking guide — book 1-2 days ahead. Finding a good English-speaking national park guide independently is difficult. I arrange experienced guides who know the trails, wildlife, and safe routes.
