Everything you need to know before renting a scooter or motorbike on Phu Quoc Island in 2026.
Phu Quoc rental shops offer three main categories of two-wheeled vehicles, each suited to different riding experience levels and travel styles.
The Honda Vision 110cc and Honda Air Blade 125cc are the most popular choices among tourists in Phu Quoc. These twist-and-go scooters require zero shifting experience — simply turn the throttle and brake. They offer excellent fuel economy (50-60 km per liter), have under-seat storage for a backpack and 2 helmets, and are lightweight enough for any rider to handle comfortably.
Best for: First-time riders, couples, city exploration, beach hopping, grocery runs. Handles all paved roads on Phu Quoc with ease.
The Honda Wave 110cc and Honda Future 125cc use a semi-automatic clutch (gear shift with foot, no hand clutch). These workhorses of Vietnamese roads are incredibly durable, easy to repair anywhere on the island, and the cheapest rental option. They have slightly better ground clearance than scooters, making them suitable for light dirt roads.
Best for: Budget travelers, riders with some experience, longer stays (monthly rental), light off-road exploration.
The Honda Winner 150cc, Yamaha Exciter 150cc, and Yamaha NVX 155cc offer more power and sportier handling. These bikes have manual transmission (except NVX which is automatic), better suspension for rough roads, and disc brakes front and rear. They can comfortably cruise at 80 km/h and handle steep hills with a passenger.
Best for: Experienced riders, off-road exploration to hidden beaches, riding through Phu Quoc National Park trails, adrenaline seekers.
The Honda SH 125cc and Honda SH 160cc are the luxury option. Wide comfortable seats, smooth ride, ABS brakes, large under-seat storage, USB charging port, and smart key. These premium scooters are ideal for riders who want maximum comfort for all-day exploration.
Best for: Comfort-oriented travelers, couples who want a smooth ride, riders who value features and build quality.
Understanding Vietnam's driving license rules is important for a hassle-free experience on Phu Quoc. Here is the current situation as of 2026:
Vietnamese law requires all motorbike riders to hold a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) with a motorcycle endorsement, or a Vietnamese motorbike license. Riding without a valid license can result in a fine of 800,000 to 1,200,000 VND ($32-48 USD).
International Driving Permit (IDP): This is the official document recognized by Vietnam. You must obtain it in your home country before traveling. The IDP must include a motorcycle/motorbike category (Category A). The IDP from countries that signed the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic is recognized in Vietnam.
Practical reality on Phu Quoc: Most rental shops will rent a scooter to tourists showing any form of valid photo ID (passport, domestic driving license). Police checkpoints on Phu Quoc are less frequent than in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. However, if you are stopped without a valid IDP, the police can legally fine you and impound the motorbike.
Insurance implications: Without a valid IDP, your travel insurance company may deny any claim related to a motorbike accident. This is the most important reason to get an IDP — it is not about the fine, it is about having valid insurance coverage if something goes wrong.
Our recommendation: Get an IDP before your trip. It costs $15-20 in most countries, takes 1-5 business days, and gives you complete peace of mind. If you do not have one, ride extra carefully and always wear a helmet.
Understanding insurance options helps protect you financially during your trip. Here is what we offer:
Included with every rental at no extra cost.
Additional $2/day for complete coverage.
Important: We also recommend purchasing separate travel insurance that covers motorbike riding before your trip. Companies like World Nomads and SafetyWing offer policies that specifically include motorbike coverage in Southeast Asia.
Fuel is easy to find across Phu Quoc, but knowing where and how to refuel will save you time and money.
Fuel prices (2026): Gasoline costs approximately 23,000-25,000 VND per liter ($0.92-1.00 USD). A full tank on most scooters holds 4-5 liters and costs about 100,000-125,000 VND ($4-5). This will get you 200-300 km of riding — more than enough for a full day exploring the entire island.
Gas stations: Official Petrolimex and PV Oil gas stations are located along the main DT975 road from Duong Dong to An Thoi, and on DT973 heading north. Duong Dong town has 4-5 gas stations within the center.
Roadside fuel sellers: In remote areas (northern coast, off-road trails), you will find small shops selling gasoline from glass bottles or hand-pumped dispensers. The fuel quality is the same, but prices may be slightly higher (30,000-35,000 VND/liter). These sellers are a lifesaver when the nearest gas station is 20+ km away.
Tip: Never let your tank drop below quarter-full, especially when exploring remote northern beaches. Fill up in Duong Dong before heading out for the day.
Phu Quoc has significantly improved its road infrastructure in recent years, but conditions vary depending on where you ride.
Main highways (excellent): The DT975 highway running north-south through the island center, and the coastal roads connecting major tourist areas, are smooth asphalt roads with lane markings. These roads are comparable to any city road and are safe for all bike types.
Coastal and beach access roads (good to moderate): Roads to popular beaches like Sao Beach, Ong Lang Beach, and Long Beach are paved but may have occasional potholes. Ride at moderate speed and watch for sand patches near beach entrances.
Northern roads (moderate to rough): The roads to Rach Vem (Starfish Beach), Bai Thom, and Ganh Dau have some unpaved sections with loose gravel. These roads are manageable on any bike at slow speed (20-30 km/h) during dry season. During rainy season, a semi-automatic bike with better ground clearance is recommended.
Off-road trails (rough): Paths through Phu Quoc National Park and trails to hidden waterfalls and secluded beaches are unpaved red dirt. These require experience and ideally a 150cc+ manual bike. Do not attempt off-road trails during heavy rain.
Traffic rules: Drive on the right side of the road. Speed limits are 40 km/h in town and 60 km/h on highways. Helmet wearing is mandatory. Traffic is light compared to mainland Vietnam — you will rarely encounter traffic jams, even in Duong Dong center.
Distance: 70 km | Duration: 4-5 hours | Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Start from Duong Dong heading north on DT975. Visit Vinpearl Safari (entrance from outside is free for photos). Continue to Ganh Dau cape for stunning views of Cambodia. Head east to Rach Vem pier to see starfish in shallow crystal-clear water (best at low tide). Return via the interior road through pepper plantations. Stop at a local pepper farm for a free tasting tour.
Distance: 60 km | Duration: Full day | Difficulty: Easy
Head south on DT975 to An Thoi town. Visit Sao Beach (widely regarded as the most beautiful beach on the island with powdery white sand). Continue to the Hon Thom cable car station for panoramic views. Explore the An Thoi fishing harbor. On the return, stop at the Coconut Tree Prison historical site. End with sunset at Long Beach.
Distance: 45 km | Duration: 3-4 hours | Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Ride east from Duong Dong to Ham Ninh fishing village — one of the oldest settlements on Phu Quoc. Try the famous Ham Ninh crab at a waterfront restaurant (fresh crab from 100,000 VND). Continue north along the coast to Bai Thom area for deserted beaches. Return via the cross-island road through lush tropical forest.
Distance: 30 km | Duration: 2-3 hours | Difficulty: Easy
The perfect afternoon ride. Head north from Duong Dong along the west coast to Ong Lang Beach (quieter alternative to Long Beach). Continue to Cua Can bridge — a beautiful spot for photos. Find a beachside bar on Ong Lang Beach for sunset drinks. Return to Duong Dong Night Market for dinner — the freshest and cheapest seafood on the island.
Distance: 120 km | Duration: Full day (8+ hours) | Difficulty: Moderate
The ultimate Phu Quoc experience — ride the complete coastal loop around the entire island in one day. Start early (7 AM) heading north. This combines all of the above routes. Pack water and snacks, fill up the tank in Duong Dong, and bring rain gear. Avoid this route during heavy rain season. Best attempted with a 125cc+ bike.
Phu Quoc is one of the safest places in Vietnam to ride, but these precautions will ensure your trip stays incident-free:
It is the law, and helmets save lives. Fasten the chin strap properly.
Potholes, sand patches, and stray dogs can appear without warning. Keep speed under 40 km/h in town.
Many roads outside Duong Dong have no street lights. If you must ride at night, stick to the main DT975 highway.
Vietnam has strict DUI laws with fines from 2-8 million VND ($80-320). Police checkpoints increase during holidays.
Coastal roads often have sand washed onto them. Sand on asphalt is extremely slippery — slow down significantly.
Tropical sun causes severe sunburn on arms and legs while riding. Wear long sleeves or apply SPF 50+.
Use the steering lock and remove the key whenever parked. Chain locks are available from us for free.
Carry your passport (or photocopy), IDP, and rental agreement while riding. Police may ask for these.
Parking on Phu Quoc is generally easy and inexpensive, but a few tips will help:
Hotels and resorts: Most accommodations have free motorbike parking. Simply park in the designated area and use the steering lock.
Tourist attractions: Major sites like VinWonders, Grand World, and the cable car station have monitored parking for 5,000-10,000 VND ($0.20-0.40). You receive a ticket — do not lose it, or you will need to show bike registration.
Beaches: Popular beaches (Sao Beach, Long Beach) have informal parking areas where an attendant charges 10,000-20,000 VND. Remote beaches have no parking fee — simply park beside the road and use your lock.
Night Market (Duong Dong): Designated parking near the market entrance costs 5,000-10,000 VND. Avoid parking on the sidewalk outside the parking zone — police occasionally fine for this.
Anti-theft tips: Always use the steering lock. Never leave valuables in the under-seat compartment. Park in well-lit areas at night. If parking overnight outside your hotel, consider using a cable lock (we provide these free).
Phu Quoc's rainy season runs from June to October, with the heaviest rainfall in August and September. However, rain rarely lasts all day — tropical showers are typically intense but short (30-60 minutes). You can absolutely enjoy Phu Quoc by motorbike during rainy season with these precautions:
Rain patterns: Most rain falls in the afternoon (2-5 PM). Mornings are usually clear and dry. Plan your longest rides for the morning and return to your hotel by early afternoon.
Riding in rain: If caught in rain, slow down significantly (20-30 km/h max), increase following distance, brake gently (never brake hard on wet roads), and be extra cautious on turns. Painted road markings and metal manhole covers become extremely slippery when wet.
Essential rain gear: We provide a free rain poncho with every rental. For extended rainy season stays, we recommend purchasing a full rain suit (jacket + pants) from any local shop for 100,000-150,000 VND ($4-6). Waterproof phone pouches are also essential — available at the night market for 50,000 VND.
Road conditions: Dirt roads in the north become muddy and can be impassable during heavy rain. Stick to paved roads during the rainy season unless you are an experienced off-road rider. Puddles can hide deep potholes — ride around them, not through them.
Benefits of rainy season: Lower rental prices, fewer tourists, lush green scenery, dramatic sunsets after storms, and better hotel deals. Many repeat visitors prefer this season for its authenticity and tranquility.
